This father of the bride template will help you write a speech that’s memorable for all the right reasons.  Heartfelt, witty, and perfectly pitched.

Speechy is a team you can trust and we’re rated ‘excellent’ on Trustpilot for a reason. We wrote ‘The Modern Couple’s Guide to Wedding Speeches’ and our speech advice has been featured everywhere from The New York Times to The Observer.

Unlike other templates on the market, this one is designed to celebrate your unique relationship with your daughter. It is NOT…

  • ❌ A cheesy gag-fest
  • ❌ Drenched in dull wedding-waffle
  • ❌ A predictable collection of clichés
  • ❌ A copy-and-paste job anyone could deliver

Instead, it helps you create a moment your daughter will cherish forever – with storytelling, humour, and just the right amount of sentiment.

How it works

1 - Buy Like A Pro

Click, pay, and boom – you’re on your way to delivering a speech that keeps guests glued, not grimacing.

2 - Download Your Template Immediately

Grab your Father of the Bride Speech Template straight from Checkout, your Dashboard, or your inbox (and yep, check the junk folder – brilliance hides there sometimes).

4 - Unlock Your Best Stories

Use our editable Content-Creator PDF to jog your memory and find those golden anecdotes. No, it won’t write your speech for you (we’re good, not magical), but it’ll help make it personal and full of meaning.

5 - Ace Your Delivery

Great speeches need more than good writing—they need good delivery. Our template includes tips on pacing, pausing, and avoiding the dreaded monotone.

6 - Need Extra Help? We're Here For You

Most dads smash it with just the template. But if you want extra polish, you can upgrade to our Edit, Bespoke, or Delivery Coaching service. We’ll guide you through it (figuratively… unless you’re into hand-holding).

What to include in a father of the bride speech

  1. Start strong: welcome everyone warmly. Cut the boring wedding waffle. Remember it’s the couple’s job to thank people, not yours. Instead, kick off with some gentle, and crucially, original humour and set up your narrative theme. (about 30 seconds)
  2. Celebrate your daughter: tell a story, not a Wikipedia page of her achievements. Talk about her childhood, teenage years and the woman she’s become. Acknowledge the contribution her mum has made to her upbringing too. (3–4 minutes)
  3. Welcome your new son- or daughter-in-law warmly. Avoid clichés. Instead tell stories – funny ones possibly or ones that show their qualities in action. Mention their parents and your pleasure in the two families uniting without it being cheesy platitude. Make it real. (about 1 minute)
  4. Possibly mention lost loved ones: talk to the couple. Would they like you to mention grandparents or loved ones who have passed away or can’t attend? There’s usually a recognition of the dearly departed at some point during the wedding but there’s no need to double up. (about 30 seconds)
  5. A few words to the couple: it could be some slightly comedic but hopefully insightful advice. Or it could be about the joy you feel in seeing them together and knowing they’re right for each other. (about 1 minute)
  6. The toast. Call back to the theme of the speech. Make the finale profound and meaningful but add a bit of wit and humour too. (about 30 seconds)

Avoid the classic dad traps: oversharing, over-toasting and droning on about costs or your daughter’s exam results.

How long? Aim for five to nine minutes (up to ten once you allow for laughter and pauses). That's roughly 1,000–1,100 words: no fewer than 750 and no more than 1,300.

Take a look inside

Every Speechy template comes with a choice of speech themes, written by our professional scriptwriters, plus our editable Content-Creator questionnaire to help you uncover your best stories, and expert tips on delivery. It's not a fill-in-the-blanks script; it's a clever structure that turns your material into genuine humour and powerful sentiment.

A taste of the template

(from the “A Lifetime of Love” theme)

My main task in the run up to this wedding has been to provide regular, hourly texts with my latest thoughts on the menu and wine, all of which (your daughter’s name) has promptly ignored. Now, she’s given me the challenge of trying to sum up a lifetime of love in less than eight minutes. (shake head despairingly)

So… I first met (daughter’s name) in (year they were born), and it’s safe to say they were already (description from infancy that still fits them now, eg ‘a bit of a talker’, ‘impressively loud’).

Frequently asked questions

How long should a father of the bride speech be?

Warm, witty and to the point. We suggest five to nine minutes (up to ten once you allow for laughter and pauses). That's roughly 1,000–1,100 words: no fewer than 750 and no more than 1,300. Guests want a speech that's engaging and full of personality, not a chronological retelling of your daughter’s existence. It’s the stories, not a list of facts, that matter. With our template, you'll have a great speech drafted in under an hour.

Who should the father of the bride thank?

Keep it short and sincere: welcome the guests (especially anyone who's travelled), the bride’s mother and the other set of parents. You certainly don’t need to thank the venue staff or anyone who has been paid. Our template guides you through modern etiquette so nobody's missed and nobody's bored.

How do I welcome my new son- or daughter-in-law without clichés?

Give us a reason to love them beyond their excellent taste in your child. Rather than “She’s found a wonderful partner”, try a detail that shows why they belong: “The first time Sophie came for Sunday lunch, she asked for my roast potato recipe. James, that’s how you get written into the will.”

Use a real moment from your own family. A little affection, a little humour and they’ll feel welcomed rather than formally approved.

What if I get emotional during my speech?

Practise aloud so you know which lines might bring a wobble, and follow a heartfelt moment with a gentle joke to give everyone a chance to recover.

A few happy tears are part of the occasion. If they come, pause, breathe and take a sip of water. There’s no rush.

It can also help to have a line ready for the moment emotion takes over: “Bear with me. I’ve reached the bit I should have laminated.”

Can a stepdad or mum use this template?

This structure could work for anyone speaking as the bride's parent but we also have a dedicated Stepfather of the Bride Template (£29) and a Mother of the Bride Speech Template (£29) if you'd like prompts written specifically for your role.

Let’s be real – guests don’t want a Wikipedia page of your daughter’s achievements. They want a speech that’s engaging, fun, and full of personality.

That’s why our Father of the Bride Speech Template helps you craft a story, not just a list of facts.

💡 Instead of: “Sophie was always a bright child and did well in school.”
🎤 You’ll say: “Sophie’s first word was ‘no’ – which, looking back, was a strong indication of what parenting her would be like.”

💡 Instead of: “She’s found a wonderful partner in James.”
🎤 You’ll say: “From the moment James met Sophie, he knew she was the one. He was right, of course – though I suspect Sophie let him believe it was his idea.”

The result? A speech that’s natural, memorable, and keeps the guests hanging on your every word.

father of the bride speech advice and toast advice - how to be funny, original and sentimental

Let’s get one thing straight – you don’t need outdated wedding jokes to be funny.

🚫 “I knew this day would come… because my bank account warned me.”
🚫 “Marriage is like a deck of cards – you start with two hearts and a diamond, then end up with a club and a spade.”

Yeah… no.

Our Father of the Bride Speech Template helps you craft genuinely witty humour that actually lands. No tired gags, no lazy one-liners – just smart, personal comedy that fits the moment.

We’re rated ‘Excellent' on Trustpilot for a reason...

I chose the ‘Father of the Bride Speech Template’. Brilliant! Everything fell into place based on a choice of templates they offered. Following their advice, I did a first cut. Testing it on a friend, they said it was “personal, funny ... nailed it."
I wanted to make my daughter proud and make sure my wife wasn't embarrassed. I'm not a naturally speaker but I ended up lapping up applause and loving it. Even my wife was impressed.
Long story short, I had multiple people on my wedding day tell me their favorite part of the wedding was my speech, something I would have never guessed people would say!
