How to Use Quotes
Before we begin, a word of warning… Great quotes shouldn’t make you lazy. Use quotes to enhance your speech—not replace it.
Write your speech first, then see if a quote or two can make it even better.
1 – Make the Quotes Meaningful
Think about the songs, films, and shows that mean something to you and the couple. Any of these can offer great quote inspiration—whether it’s a heartwarming lyric or a throwaway comedy line that perfectly sums them up.
2 – Don’t Overload
As a general rule, stick to two quotes max—one near the top, one towards the end. Less is more when it comes to impact.
3 – Quote Recognisable Names
It’s good to quote people we’ve heard of (or want to Google immediately). A well-known quote instantly feels more relatable and relevant.
4 – Add a Back Reference
Context matters. Put the quote into a personal story, or follow it with a witty aside or anecdote to keep things grounded and original.

Quotes about friendship
You may feel obliged to include a lot of quotes relevant to the bride and groom as it is technically their big day, but remember, there’s another couple who are JUST as important to pay tribute to – yourself and the bride!
The Maid of Honour speech is basically a six to seven-minute talk where at least five minutes are dedicated to you telling the bride how amazing she is. So you’re going to need some quotes that show everyone just how awesome your friendship is.
“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.”
“There is nothing like puking with somebody to make you into old friends.”
”You can always tell a real friend: when you’ve made a fool of yourself he doesn’t feel you’ve done a permanent job.”
“It’s the friends you can call up at 4am that matter.”
“There is one friend in life each of us who seems not a separate person, however dear and beloved but an expansion and interpretation, of one’s self, the very meaning of one’s soul.”
“I live for the nights I can’t remember, with the people that I won’t forget”
– Drake
“I do not want people to be very agreeable, as it saves me the trouble of liking them a great deal.”
“As soon as I saw you I knew an adventure was going to happen.”
“When you’re in jail, a good friend will be trying to bail you out. A best friend will be in the cell next to you saying, ‘Damn that was fun’.”
“You are the finest, loveliest, tenderest, and most beautiful person I have ever known – and even that is an understatement. ”
Romantic Quotes
Despite universally being acknowledged as ‘pretty good’, love can be a hard thing to sum up.
And when it’s someone’s special day, you want to do the happy couple’s love and happiness justice. A well-chosen quote saves dozens of wasted words and hours of stress – so utilise them….
“Nobody has ever measured, not even poets, how much the heart can hold.”
“A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.”
“Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part.”
“When marrying, ask yourself this question: Do you believe that you will be able to converse well with this person into your old age? Everything else in marriage is transitory.”
“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is to love and be loved in return.”
“There is no remedy for love but to love more .”
Funny Quotes
Let’s be honest; most of us don’t read philosophy or poetry these days. Instead, we spend our time in front of the TV or Netflix. But there’s plenty of wisdom to be found there.
If you want to raise a laugh, go to the best comedians and comedies. After 30 seasons, The Simpsons has hundreds of funny one-liners about marriage, but this Homer Simpson-ism is our favourite.
“When a woman says nothing’s wrong – everything’s wrong. When a woman says everything’s wrong – EVERYTHING’S WRONG.”
“I love being married. It’s so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.”
“Marriage is like a game of chess except the board is free-flowing water, the pieces are made of smoke and no move you make will have any effect on the outcome.”
“To keep your marriage brimming, with love in the wedding cup, whenever you’re wrong, admit it; whenever you’re right, shut up.”
“Marriage: a friendship recognised by the police.”
Create Your Own Classic Quotes
Of course, if none of the quotes above feel quite right, why not come up with one of your own?
Some of the best lines in a Maid of Honour speech are original – quirky, heartfelt, and totally personal.
A well-timed observation or a perfectly put one-liner could end up being the moment everyone remembers (and repeats). So don’t just borrow someone else’s wisdom-add your own to the mix.
